Four-Cylinder Engine (I4)

A four-cylinder engine is a type of internal combustion engine that uses four cylinders to generate power. It is the most common engine configuration in modern passenger vehicles, especially in compact and mid-size cars. Most four-cylinder engines are arranged in a straight line, known as the inline (I4) layout.

Advantages of a 4-Cylinder Engine:

  1. Smoother Operation – Evenly balanced design results in reduced vibrations and quieter performance.
  2. Good Performance–Economy Balance – Offers solid power while still being relatively fuel-efficient.
  3. Higher Power and Torque – Delivers more output than a 3-cylinder engine, ideal for longer drives or heavier loads.
  4. More Refined & Durable – Typically lasts longer and provides a smoother ride due to better engine dynamics.

Disadvantages of a 4-Cylinder Engine:

  1. Higher Emissions – Larger engine size can lead to increased carbon emissions.
  2. Lower Fuel Efficiency (Compared to 3-Cylinder) – Slightly more fuel consumption, especially in city traffic.
  3. Higher Cost – Both purchase price and maintenance can be more expensive than smaller engines.
